Thanksgiving Day, in the United States of America

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. On this day, people thank God for all the good things in their lives. The first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by the Pilgrims, in Massachusetts. They were immigrants from England. They traveled on a ship called the Mayflower and arrived in Massachusetts in December 1620.

The first year in America was very hard for the Pilgrims. The winter was terrible and they did not have much food. The Native Americans showed the Pilgrims how to grow native food like corn. After the first harvest, the Pilgrims celebrated their first Thanksgiving with the Native Americans.

Today many Americans travel to celebrate this holiday with their families. Thanksgiving dinner is traditionally a turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, various vegetables and a pumpkin pie.
